I’ve written about this before, but in case you didn’t know, I am a proud breastfeeding mama. I nursed my daughter for 18 months and plan to do at least as long with my son (which means I’ve got over a year left to go). I am fortunate in that breastfeeding has come very easily and naturally to us. But one of the things that is actually the most difficult for me about breastfeeding is remembering to drink enough water! I will frequently get to the end of a day and realize I’ve only had one or two glasses of water – and for me, dehydration like that can lead to feeling fatigued or even cause a headache, which is definitely not fun.
It’s surprisingly easy to forget to drink water when you’re chasing around an almost-3-year-old and a 4 month old all day long. I always make sure I have a sippy of water and a snack for my daughter when we leave the house – it’s so much more difficult to remember to take the time to do the same for me! Especially now that it’s summertime and we’re frequently on-the-go – headed to playdates, parks, errands, etc – the thirst won’t hit me until we’ve left the house and there’s nothing but a gross looking water fountain at the park to grab a quick swig from on our way past.
So what’s a nursing mom to do? I recently found a great solution for staying hydrated with my new Brita Water Bottle. They have several varieties, but a few weeks ago I picked up a hard-sided bottle at Walmart (in the hardware section with the other Brita filters) and I honestly have been loving it!
I fill it up first thing in the morning, and then try to make sure to refill it once or twice throughout the day and bring it with me anytime I leave the house. I love that it’s small enough to fit easily in my car’s cup holder!
I’m also resolving to keep a stash on hand of nutritious grab-and-go, mommy-only snacks to stave off that mid-morning hunger (and keep me from raiding the pantry for not-so-nutritious choices).
To be perfectly honest, I have never been a big filtered water person. I grew up drinking tap water, and it’s never really bothered me. So I was actually kind of surprised to discover that the filter in this water bottle makes a really noticeable difference in the taste of the water! Whether I fill it up from the tap at home, from a water fountain or bathroom sink while I’m out and about, it is clean, refreshing, great tasting water. Plus I love that it’s made out of durable, BPA-free plastic, and has a terrific easy-sip straw.
Staying hydrated while breastfeeding can be really difficult, especially when you have more than one child. But it’s all about being proactive – a Brita water bottle is the perfect way to do that!
Do you have any tips to stay hydrated on-the-go through the busy summer months? Or how about some good grab-and-go snack ideas?
